It isn't a horrid rainy day but a misty hazy grey rainy day.  As soon as that sort of light wispy rain falls where you don't actually need an umbrella but rather you, walk through and it feels like those Evian spray mists are constantly on you, I think about wanting to re-watch my ultimate late childhood film 'Only Yesterday' or in Japanese 'Omohide Poro Poro' [2], directed by Hotaru Okamoto released by Studio Ghibli (of the more famous Hayao Miyazaki films...).  People have their own definitive 'coming of age' films and this was one of mine.  It's an animated film that touches on subjects that are most definitely adult, about a girl who can't quite get let go of her childhood and all the memories that she has from it.  It borders on being a bit Judy Blume-esque with its talk of menstruation, blushing boy crushes and sisterly jealousy but it's all still done with reassuring innoncent prettiness in the only way that Studio Ghibli does.  A DVD that definitley needs to be stowed away for days like these whilst drinking fruit tea and eating something homemade.

After watching it, the things that I take away from the film, besides the memorable lines and beautiful score, visually, are the wash of misty/pale colours used in the backgrounds, the skin tones and the clothes as the main character remembers her childhood with slightly faded hues.  I was in a bit of a wash-out [4] mood a while back and now combined with these 'Pyjama Parties' [5] images from the Dec/Jan Paris Vogue shot by Mark Segal, on this particular day, an old Marks & Spencer silk pyjama shirt got a look in.  An outfit for 'Only Yesterday' watching and general pottering around.

Of course I am dressing up this grey drabness of a post to cover up the fact that I'm in and out of the toilet with a hideous stomach virus.... sorry I had to ruin the somewhat pretty-pretty musings.
