Hildur and her skills....

I can lament all I want about my lack of natural talent in the way of the creative fields (art, crafts, fashion) etc, but in the end I'm happy to be an admirer and a talker-upper of what I see.  I may not be able to emulate them but I can sure as hell praise them in a royal-icing-sickeningly OTT way.  Take Hildur Björk Yeoman [1] who comes from Iceland.  She's exactly the same age as me (about 7 days older...) but her bio [2] is far more impressive in the way that creativity was born right from the start.  She was practically blind as a child and so thew herself into drawing paper dolls and made clothes for her Barbie dolls.  I played with cardboard boxes and smeared my mother's Olay cream all over the walls.

She turned her back on a science course and headed for fashion, working for Jonathan Saunders and Yazbukey along the way and then started her own atelier shortly after.  Then she became the creative director for the brand Brigitte Bird [3] which sadly has now lost financial backing.  So this wonderful SS08 collection which I imagine were Pinocchio a girl this is what she would be kitted out in, will alas never be sold.  With all the sweet covered buttons, playsuits, ruffles and long triangular collars, it doesn't surprise me that the source of inspiration was Victorian children's clothing and pre-Rafaelite paintings.  I can't sigh over the pics for too long though as it won't be going into production....

As a possessor of much natural talent, Hildur is currently busying herself with her illustration work for an accessories brand called Thelma [10].  This is a case whereby the illustrations are selling it in to me more so than the photographs [11].  I love the sort of sultry femmes who are also girly-looking that Hildur depicts in her illustration work.  How much I long to dot myself with rouge and wear incredible eyelashes as well as wearing Thelma's headpieces after seeing these?

It doesn't end there as Hildur is embarking on her own range of hand crochet bags as illustrated below which will be stocked at Systur [17], a quirky lingerie boutique in Reykjavik.

No, this isn't an embittered post about what I lack but rather a celebration of those that had it in them all along.   I'm quite content in being a mediocrity as long as there are those that are elevated above that for me to harp on about...
