I'm longing to go to lands far far away this year to somehow escape my usual trips filled with fashion and frippery.... but I know I'd end up reverting back to sniffing out SOMETHING fashion related from even the most remote of countries.  It doesn't surprise me that even in lands far away with a population of 45,000, beautiful clothes will always emerge.  Guðrun & Guðrun is a knitwear label that hails from the Faroe Islands, quite literally the 'Sheep Islands', lodged between Iceland, Scotland and Norway and was started by two Faroese women.  Their philosophy reminded me of what Sandra Backlund said about the quietness and isolation of home inspiring her work.

“It’s good to come to Europe for input and inspiration, but it’s crucial
to come back home to the silence and not be disturbed by the hectic
life of fashion” 

I seeked them out after discovering one of their sweaters on the Aerluxe site and found a misty and mythology-infused SS08 collection inspired by the legend of Kraka (also known as Aslaug) who was tested by a Viking king with a riddle of coming to him not dressed, nor naked.  She came wrapped in her hair and a fishing net and later they were married.  The neutrality of net and hair runs through the collection and I haven't touched the garments but despite being knitwear, it all looks gossamer-light.  The combination of Faroese craft and skill, a modern understanding of style contrasts (evident in the styling) and just my attraction to seemingly delicate garments makes Guðrun & Guðrun worth seeking out.... those 18 tiny isles....
