The Next Blah Blah Blah...

Style.com's 22 New York Fashion Week Preview was quite a nifty one.  It gives me a foresight into a fashion week that is growing higher in my esteem... waves are being made out in New York and there's a whole batch of ickle presentations that are quite intriguing.  Seeing as I couldn't make it out there and the invites to parties/shows flooding in just makes me really really frustrated/angry though I guess going out there with swollen eyes was never going to be a great look anyway so I've saved myself the embarrassment.

One teensy niggle though about the Style.com feature.  Their tendancy to label every new designer 'The next...' e.g. Julian Louie is the NEXT Peter Som.  It's similar to music journalists who talk up new bands/artists by calling them 'the next Bloc Party/Modest Mouse/Animal Collective...' or worse, making equations/formulas with bands; 'Bloc Party mixed with AC/DC and a dose of Kate Bush' (yes I did realise how ridiculous that sounded...).  My point is, why can't the designer just be themselves... as opposed to 'the next something...'?

Anyway, gripe over.  I'm not overly excited about Peter Som so adding the comparison isn't going to make Julian Louie better because I personally just like Julian Louie for being... Julian Louie, if that makes any sense.  Something about his proportions/fit and his restrained use of embellishment and colour.  There's just a 'flow' to his silhouettes which is not to say they're entirely devoid of 'daring' as the risks are taken in the lengths and the volumes.... with pieces being too short/puffy for some.  That isn't the case for me though so I'll be looking forward to his 'contoured and body-conscious' looks for SS09.
